Lakshadweep, formed in the year 1956 consists of 36 islands, 12 atolls,3 reefs,5 submerged banks and 10 inhabited islands. It is 220 to 440 Km away from the coastal city of Kochi, lies in the Arabian trade route and can be reached by air and sea from Kochi and Calicut.Kavarathi is the administrative headquarter. The inhabited islands are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.
Lakshadweep enjoys a pleasant tropical climate.Sounthwest monsoon are available from Jun to October. Months from October to May are pleasant and it is the best tourism time. Coconut is the major crop. Breadfruit is the state tree. Lakshadweep is home for various sea birds mainly Taratashi-the state bird (Sterna Fuseate) & Karifetu (Anous Folidus).
